Now its time to dig into the cabinets and drawers.
The first thing I did was bring in a cardboard box from the garage and put it in the corner of the kitchen for the whole month. This is where I threw everything that I'm going to give away, sell, or throw away. I will sort through it soon, but for now, it worked. We got so many fun and useful gifts from the wedding. Mostly things for the kitchen. Because of this, I had to get rid of a lot of older things. If you have trouble getting rid of things (sometimes I do), then just ask yourself these few questions and it should help
When was the last time you used this item?
Do you have another item that is the same thing or can do the same thing?
Once you can say bye to a few things, you will have extra room in your drawers and cabinets, which will make your life easier.
The first example of this, and the first cabinet you will take a peek into is the Tupperware cabinet. Do you open your cabinet and have all your Tupperware topples over on you and falls out of the cabinet? Well I used to. So I transferred them all into their own lower cabinet. We were lucky to get a whole new set of Tupperware for our wedding (the stackable kind) and originally I still kept all the old ones. Then this month, I thought to myself...."You don't need 40 pieces of Tupperware, you aren't EVER using them all at once," "most of these don't even have matching lids!" So I took everything out, only put back what I NEEDED, everything else went in to the "box."
I stacked everything up and neatly put everything back. I made sure to think about reaching in there and easily being able to get to what I needed.
Side note: Even if you don't have stackable Tupperware, you can always stack the bottoms and put all the tops into a basket.
(sorry for the darkness)
Next cabinet is the "coffee cabinet." This used to be the spice cabinet, but I couldn't stand it. I couldn't see what spices we had, so again (just like the pantry), we were buying things we already had. This was also the medicine cabinet...I know I know. Mr. Hunt fussed at me all the time for having the medications and the spices in the same cabinet, so I changed it.
Right underneath the cabinet is our new Keurig coffee maker that we got for our wedding. So to keep all the little individual coffee's I had to think of something.
So this picture is a little old. Sorry. The bottom shelf is pretty much the same except I now have our tea bags on there too and the manual is not on the shelf anymore. The straw cup was made from a soup can covered in wrapping paper. I use straws every morning for my smoothies and my water throughout the day at work, so this is very helpful. On the second shelf is where I keep the coffee cups. They used to be in the cup cabinet, but that was on the other side of the stove. This makes it so its easier to get when making coffee, and frees up space in the cup cabinet. The top shelf now has tea and lemonade pitchers instead of that first aid stuff. HAHA!
The next cabinet is the liquor cabinet and SURPRISE, I have a before and after picture! Wooohooo! This cabinet is above the microwave. We don't really drink too much liquor, but we have accumulated some throughout our stay and we used to keep it in the pantry. With the new pantry organization, I knew I needed to "hide" the liquor. So I did.
Before:
After:
Mr. Hunt has been collecting shot glasses since he was a little boy, so I wanted to be able to keep them all together. Once again, we don't use them, so they can at least be somewhere together, but they don't necessarily have to be in reach.
The cabinet that I call the USELESS cabinet has NOTHING in it. Phew. You know that cabinet that some houses have that is above the refrigerator? I mean, who would be able to reach that on a regular basis? I have to get a chair to get into it and I'm not really short. So, I didn't want anything in there. Here is the before:
Wow! I have been putting all manuals from EVERYTHING up there. Actually, I have been putting them on top of the fridge and then when I got the chance to move a chair over there, I would put them out of sight into the cabinet. You will see what I did with those manuals soon, but the after of this cabinet is NOTHING!
The next cabinet is the cup cabinet. I once again got rid of a lot of our plastic cups. Its just me and Mr. Hunt, but somehow we have a million cups! PURGE! GET RID OF THINGS YOU DON'T NEED! So I did. Here is the aftermath:
See how many cups we still have? Now close your eyes and try to picture what this cabinet looked like before I threw away about 20 cups, and before I transfered the coffee cups to the other cabinet! WOW!
Next cabinet is the medicine cabinet. I now have a cabinet JUST for the medications and my family binders. I have a fun before and after for this one too!
Before:
After:
This before already has the medicine in there, but do you see the two top shelves? EWWW! All the mugs on the top shelf were all thrown away. There is a reason they were all the way up there, because they weren't being used. They weren't being used, so they were thrown away. Now I have a lot of space, and that makes me happy. The second shelf had all the shot glasses and lots and lots of "collected over time" cozies. The shot glasses were moved to the liquor cabinet and the cozies were moved to the garage "man room!" I kept two cozies inside for everyday use.
Now I have nothing on the top shelf, since I can't really reach it anyway. I have my family binders on the middle shelf and medicine is on the bottom shelf. I went through all our medications and had to throw away a lot of it because they were expired. Then I used these green baskets to group them and keep them nice and in order (instead of having bottles flying around everywhere).
What are the family binders you ask? Well, I will do a whole post about them at a later date, but I have the coupon binder, the manuals binder (that is where all the manuals moved to), and the family binder. The family binder has EVERYTHING in it. More on that later.
The next cabinet is the under the sink cabinet (do you name your cabinets too, or am I just weird)?
This cabinet didn't have much of a transformation.
All I keep down there is the dogs bag (for when we go out of town), trash bags, detergent, and sponges. One thing I can't stand is the sponge. I don't like to look at the sponge if it is not in use. So when I'm done with it, I squeeze it out really good, and put it in the lined tin can under the sink. Out of sight! You can also see what couponing does with the detergent again. Look at all that dish soap! Geez!
Last cabinet for now is the plates and bowls
Yeah, we have a lot of plates and bowls too, but I couldn't throw those away. I also keep my cookbooks in there. I originally was looking for a cute cookbook stand to put them on, but then I realized that I had plenty of room in the plates cabinet for them, so there they are.
Now for the drawers. I decided the drawers needed a little pizazz so I lined them with wallpaper.
Once again I first took everything out of the drawers, cleaned them, and decided what was going to stay and what was going to go. Then I lined the drawers. This was a lot harder than I thought, but I love the outcome. Now every time I open the drawers, I smile a little.
I was planning on making my own wooden drawer organizer, but it didn't work as planned, so I didn't take any drawer pictures with everything in them. I will do a post on those when the wooden organizers are finished. For now, just look at the beauty of the empty drawers.
So, you are probably noticing that there are a few things missing and saying to yourself, "There should be more cabinets," but I'm not going to review those cabinets right now. The reason for this is that we don't have a dining room set yet. We have a TON of nice patters, bowls, and serving sets that I have all squished in a few cabinets (NOT ORGANIZED)! Until I get the dining room set and have places to put those, that is where they will stay.
Cookie sheets, pots and pans, appliances, and many more still have to be organized at a later date.
I will post on them once I get the room for everything.
Here is a quick list of things that I still am planning on doing in the kitchen and will of course share them with you as I go with the new budget plan.
Paint the entry from the garage
Get a new rug for the entry
Paint the laundry room
Organize all other cabinets after dining room set arrives
Design and do the back splash
Make a wooden organizer in the utensil drawer
That's all I can think of now, but there is probably more.
So Im pretty sure that was the longest post in this blogs history, but I hope you found some inspiration. I will say that since I have organized the kitchen, everything has stayed organized. If you find that what you did isn't working then change it! Don't be afraid to admit you thought something was going to happen and it didn't. Change it for the better. Make your life easier. I promise, you will feel lighter and happier.
See you SOON y'all!
XOXO
